Window Terminology

Regardless of whether you're located in the Pittsburgh region (Allegheny, Butler, Lawrence, Beaver counties), or outside, we hope that these terms help you better understand home windows.

Energy Star Window Standard - A performance standard set by the U.S. Department of Energy. Windows that are Energy Star qualified are those that meet the highest efficiency standards.

Glazing - Windows translucent layer that allow sunlight penetration.

Pan Flashing - A series of channels that collect the water and drain it out of the window region.

Passive Solar Heating - A process of using your windows that face south to collect the suns rays during the day time hours in order to heat your homes area.

Premature Window Failure - Windows that are improperly installed can and often do let in additional moisture into the overall opening which can result in rot, lose windows, temperature comfort loss and other problems.

Rough Opening - The general area of the wall where the window will be installed into.

Sash - A movable glass panel that can be combined with other panels to make a window.

U-factor - A measurement benchmark that rates a windows heat loss. The lower the windows U-factor, the greater the windows resistance to losing heat.

Window Manufacturer Guidelines - A set of protocols that explains to the installer the proper conditions installing your houses windows.
